Quicksilver Pro | Hossegor, France

The  perfect beach day, professional athletes, worldwide television coverage and bikinis: the essential recipe for a day on the Association of Surfing Professionals [ASP] World Tour.

The Quicksilver Pro Surfing Contest wrapped up this past week in Hossegor, France and we were lucky to catch most of the action . As always on the tour, the contest runs based on the conditions each morning. If the waves are firing and the winds are right, the Pros get in the water, the crowds form and  the groupies get excited.

Childhood

We watched some of the best compete for rankings and points towards a World Title. There is nothing greater than a stadium built by Mother Nature, game-time decided by Mother Nature, and athletes that play to her advantage.

It is hard to decide when to take out your camera, as the action happens quickly and it is much more entertaining to watch it all unfold without a viewfinder in the way. However, I still managed to grab a few frames.

John John Florence, pictured above, is a Hawaiian native, fierce young competitor and ultimately took the title in Hossegor. He outperformed the world’s best on a very stormy massive swell, pulling into barrels that looked life threatening and easing out of them with a smile on his face. While others became battered and exhausted, laying face down on the jet-ski sled, he showed no slowing down.

Professional surfers are unlike any other professional athlete in their arena. The stadium changes hourly, their equipment is fragile and variable and their fans are within intimate quarters. A surfer’s performance is heavily dependent on their ability to adapt to new situations.

As we head south down to our destination in Southern Portugal, we will be sure to grab more of the action.

It was really cool to see it in person. Watching something on TV or online is WAY different than seeing it all unfold in front of you. It’s not all highlights and sick waves. Some heats were just plain boring, to the point where we forgot who was surfing and who was up next 🙂 But it’s all worth it in the end- John John and Jadson surfed insanely well.

I hope you’re well!
